Updated: Sep 18, 2021

In the past, the kola was eaten mostly by the elderly because of their belief that it could prolong life. Actually researches in modern science have revealed that bitter kola contains chemical compounds that will help the breakdown of glycogen in the liver and has other medicinal uses which account for its longevity property in man.

There are dozens of weight loss products on the market but few supplements have clinical proof to back up their claims. According to recent studies, a new flowering plant may hold the secret to weight loss, which is just one of its’ many health benefits.

It’s called Garcinia Kola and it could just be the weight loss breakthrough we’ve been waiting for.

Botanically known as Garcinia kola, bitter kola belongs to the plant family Guttiferae found in parts of West Africa, majorly, Nigeria. Among the Yorubas, it is called ‘Orogbo’, the Igbos call it ‘Agbilu’, ‘Ugolo’, ‘Adi’ or ‘Aku ilu’ while among the Hausas, this very popular nut is known as ‘NamijinGworo’ or ‘Cidagoro’. Also, Edun or Efiari in Efik, Efiat in Ibibio, Igoligo in Idoma, Akaan in Ijo-Izon and Okain in Itsekiri.

It is a wonderful agricultural product with a wide range of applications in natural and orthodox medicine.

Bitter kola has no significant side effects on the body unlike other antibiotics like penicillin, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and so many of them. Bitter kola could have been classed among very expensive antibiotics if it wasn’t natural. A lot has been said about Garcinia Bitter Kola but also much more is yet to be revealed about this wonderful gift to nature.

There are claims that this tropical plant has the ability to repel snakes within a distance of about 300 meters radius and when in contact has the ability to demobilize or out-rightly kill a snake. The seed of bitter kola is used to neutralize all kinds of poisons and when grounded into powder and sprayed in an environment, all snakes will avoid the area.

Research Findings Have Shown The Many Medicinal Benefits That Bitter Kola Has To Those Who Eat It

HIPPOCRATES, the father of modern medicine once admonished: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” According to him, modern medicine tends towards disease prevention through foods but the majority of people who wish to eat healthy food may also miss out on the fact that cooking sometimes destroys or reduces certain elements that should nourish the body. Nutritionists say that while some foods are better eaten when cooked, some others such as fruits and certain vegetables are better eaten raw in order to get the most of each nutrient.

Bitter kola is one of such fruits which can be eaten raw and still benefit from its high nutritional content. Eating a piece of bitter kola daily can help in the treatment for low libido, low sperm count, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, reduction of eye pressure, treating hangover, improving lung function and knee osteoarthritis among others.

Medical experts at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, OAUTH, in a study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, said that bitter kola has a significant analgesic/anti-inflammatory effects in knee osteoarthritis patients.

Bitter kola is a potential osteoarthritis disease activity modifier with good mid-term outcome.

Another study on bitter kola published recently in Science Journal of Microbiology showed that seed and leaf of bitter kola have antibacterial activity on clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Bitter kola has been shown to be a popular treatment for diarrhoea and fever. The seed extract is antiseptic and is active mostly against gram-positive bacteria, while the leaf, is active mostly against gram-negative bacteria. It is also very effective for hepatitis.

No wonder some folks harnessed the possibility of bitter kola being a cure for the Ebola virus infections in West Africa when eaten, even when there was no medical or scientific proof to such cure.

The stem, bark and the seeds are used for acute fever, inflammation of the respiratory tract and throat infections. The seeds are also chewed to relieve hoarseness of voice, sore throat and cough.

In folk medicine, the seed is used for the treatment of liver disorder and it’s also used in the treatment of dysentery and diarrhoea. The leaves are used for stomachache and pains and they also serve as good remedy for typhoid fever.

It is also used as a social snack and offered to guests in some cultural settings. Bitter kola has been indicated in the treatment of laryngitis, general inflammation, bronchitis, viral infections and diabetes.

Highlighting few key Benefits of Bitter Kola

Improve Lung Function

Garcinia kola has been used for centuries to treat chest colds in traditional medicine, but research has taken a look and found out why it is effective.

A study in the 2008 issue of The Internet Journal of Pulmonary Medicine, performed on mice, reports that garcinia kola improved respiratory function after 28 days of use of a garcinia extract. Written by David A. Ofusori, MSc, from Igbinedion University in Nigeria, the study shows that garcinia kola works by dilating the alveolar ducts and sacs in the lungs by improving the strength of the fibers in the lung tissue.

Reduce Eye Pressure

An increase in eye pressure can lead to glaucoma, according to a report from The New York Times Health Guide. Researchers at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria tested the effectiveness of eye drops that contained 0.5 percent extract of garcinia kola.

The results of their study, published in the January 2010 issue of Middle East African Journal of Opthamology, showed that the opthamolic solution that contained the garcinia significantly reduced eye pressure when used twice a day.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by pain, inflammation and limited movement in the joints, according to the National Institutes of Health. Causes of osteoarthritis can include joint injury, obesity and aging.

Since many arthritis sufferers prefer natural herbal medicines to other pain relievers and medications, researchers at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria tested the effects of garcinia kola against arthritis symptoms.

A study, written by Olayinka O. Adegbehingbe and published in the July 2008 issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, found that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Garcinia kola could significantly reduce inflammation, pain and increase joint movement in subjects that had osteoarthritis symptoms. It is believed that bitter kola could alleviate these symptoms by eliminating the cause of arthritis, which is fluid buildup and inflammation.

Garcinia kola has several antioxidant compounds, which help to improve the immune system fight off disease and colds. This is one of the big reasons that Garcinia kola is often used to treat chest colds and other common ailments.
